Canine Physical Therapy

Submitted by Michael Adams on April 22, 2010

We all are aware of the benefits that physical therapy has on humans and canine physical therapy is no different. The need for physical therapy in dogs is even more as no one would want to see their pet suffer from any pain and thus, would want to provide them with an alternative treatment that will help in speedy recovery. Physiotherapy is characterized by physical techniques that are used by the therapist to treat a variety of injuries and illnesses and before you put your dog on physiotherapy, it is essential that the reason why the therapy is conducted is fully known or else the right treatment cannot be assured.

Dog physical therapy is intended to aid quick healing with the help of various techniques that provide relief from pain. Your dog is most likely to need a physical therapy if he has had an orthopedic surgery, experiences severe pain which is due to old age or any other problems, is very prone to injury or if he has gone through a trauma or injury.

Canine physiotherapy includes aquatic therapy, cyrotherapy, thermotherapy, massage therapy, electrical stimulation, laser therapy and a whole lot of other methods.

Aquatic therapy also known as canine water therapy is carried out in water and is very beneficial to make the weak muscles strong and helps in improving the illness. A good massage is one of the best remedies that are available to ease out pain and to treat other conditions and your dog is going to enjoy the same without any exception.

Dog physiotherapy is growing rapidly because the results can be seen in no time and your pet will be completely fine within 2 to 4 months of the therapy. It has a lot of benefits like your dog is more mobile and flexible than before; there is loss of weight and muscle gain, it helps in preventing future occurrence of any neurological diseases, stress and injury and also reduces the intake of medicines to lower pain. Canine physical therapy does not end with a session at the doctor’s clinic but is even to be carried out at home with the help of certain exercises or massages that your doctor will ask you to do. These practices have to be done at home or else the therapy will not have the desired results. It is, therefore, the responsibility of the pet owners that they get some time out with their dogs.
