DNA Testing for Dogs

Submitted by Michael Adams on April 27, 2010

DNA is the short form for Deoxyribonucleic acid. DNA is, as the name suggests a nucleic acid. DNA is present in all living organisms.

Within this is contained a coding which is known as the genetic code. This is a set of instructions that governs the entire growth and life cycle of an organism. In humans, genetics are responsible for body size, skin color, and several skills.

Your DNA may also make you more vulnerable to some illnesses or infections that have affected your family and ancestors. Conversely it may also make you stronger at resisting some forms of illness and disease.

DNA may also be used to establish the identity of a parent or to establish the identity of a criminal in investigations where DNA evidence such as hair or saliva are found at a crime scene.

Similar applications can be made when studying canines. DNA test for dogs is useful to identify many different things that might be a question mark. Canines may be sexually promiscuous, particularly if the female dog is in heat. Sometimes it is not possible to know which dog has mated with a female. When the puppies are born, DNA testing can be done to establish their breed. You may also, out of curiosity, want to know the father of the dogs in which case you will be able to use DNA testing to match the DNA of your puppies with male dogs in the area to establish the identity of the father. There may be an issue of the safety of your puppies if you have multiple male adult dogs living in the same house or area. Dogs may attack the young of another dog if they feel threatened by the advent of new dogs in what they may consider to be their territory. Thus, once you have established the identity of the father, you can avoid contact of the young pups with other males until they are strong enough to defend themselves. This sort of territorial behavior is not common but can occur, especially among more aggressive breeds.

Genetic testing is also useful in identifying dogs that may be susceptible to particular diseases based on their gene pool and the history of illness among other dogs of the same breed.

DNA testing for dogs is a relatively new science and has its limitations, particularly based on breed histories. There are many different breeds of dogs and genetic tests may not contain information on all these different breeds.
