Diabetic Dog Food Recipes

Submitted by Michael Adams on April 27, 2010

Diabetes in dogs is a very common disease. Like humans, dogs too get diabetes. Just like humans, when a dog suffers from diabetes, it is important to give the dog a diet which helps control sugars.

In order to control diabetes, along with physical exercise, food and the timely intake of medication are extremely important for both humans and their pet dogs.

When trying to prepare a meal for a diabetic dog, it is important to keep in mind that a diabetic dog diet should be low in both sugars and carbohydrates. Diabetic dog food, which is available commercially in the market and can also be prepared at home, helps control the amount of sugar produced in the dog’s body.

To control sugar, the dog’s diet has to be closely monitored. This could include making some alterations in the number of meals that your dog eats everyday. Since blood sugar levels can be stabilized by smaller meals, a single large meal can be divided into three smaller meals interspersed throughout the day. It has been seen that a single large meal can cause a sudden rise in the glucose levels and it may take about 12 to 24 hours for the levels to go back to normal.

The easiest step towards preparing a diabetic dog meal is to cut down on sugar. Diabetic dog food recipes essentially contain raw and fresh foods and low carbohydrates, sugars, and fats. The simplest meal that you can prepare for your diabetic dog is by choosing whole grains and boiling them in water. If you are giving your dog meat, make sure that it is cooked. If you have a large dog, you can cut the meat into large chunks before cooking it. For smaller dogs, ground meat usually works well. While cooking it too, try using as little fat as possible. If you are using a skillet to cook the meat, drain off the excess fat completely before serving the food to your dog.

If you are using vegetables in the meal, chop the vegetables well or grate them and add them into your pet’s meal in the raw form. One of the best meals for your diabetic dog can be prepared by mixing equal parts of raw vegetables, cooked meat, and cooked grain. You can add cottage cheese or yogurt to this meal too. Try not to give your dog any leftovers but if you have to, store these leftovers in the freezer.
