Boxer Dog Health

Submitted by Michael Adams on May 10, 2010

Boxers are considered to be good family pets. They love affection, especially from children. Boxers have muscular bodies, but may experience certain health concerns.

Some of these pet health issues may be serious. When buying these dogs, it is advisable to go to a proper breeder who takes caution in preventing genetic diseases from being transmitted through the bloodlines. This will help to reduce the risk of potential health conditions and will ensure better boxer dog health.

Boxer dogs are intelligent and loyal by nature. They make great family companions, although they can be stubborn and overly confident at times. Dog obedience training must be imparted to them in order to control their excitement and to channel it into more acceptable behaviors. Boxers are always up for a game and are quite tolerant of strangers. The boxer temperament is even tempered, courageous and slightly impish. Excessive shyness and aggression are undesirable traits in boxers and one should check the parent dogs for these traits when buying a boxer.

Boxers have an average life span of 9 years. Proper boxer dog care helps to increase longevity. Owners must be aware of the fact that even healthy boxer dogs tend to be vulnerable to some health problems. Owners must also be able to recognize the symptoms of these health issues. Deafness is one such condition that commonly affects boxers. Eye ulcers may also occur in these dogs. These ulcers should be recognized in the early stages so that the treatment can be administered immediately. This will keep the medical costs low and also prevent the dog from undergoing too much discomfort. Boxers have deep chests and this places them at risk for gastric torsion. This can be an expensive condition. One can prevent the incidence of this condition by feeding the dog smaller meals during the day. Heart disease is another condition that is prevalent among this breed. The most common type of heart diseases that occur in boxers includes cardiomyopathy and cardiac conduction disease.

Hip dysplasia is a genetic condition in which the femur of the boxer does not properly fit into the socket of the hip. Boxers are also prone to allergic rashes or other types of rashes such as dermodicosis. Some boxers may also develop epilepsy which appears between 2 to 5 years of age. If any of these symptoms are detected in boxers, one must consult a veterinarian immediately so that the proper dog health care may be administered.
