How to Raise Kitten?

(May 12, 2010)

Kittens can be a great addition to the family. Like any other family member, your little feline also requires the proper care and attention to help it grow into a healthy, happy adult. The right steps, taken right from the beginning will help you teach your kitten how to behave and prevent her from engaging in problematic behavior. Here are some tips on how to raise your kitten.

  • Even before you bring your kitten home, you need to be sure that you are equipped with all the necessary items such as food, litter, a litter box, toys and a scratching post.
  • Select cat food that is age appropriate for kittens and also ensure that it is of good quality. Kittens require a greater amount of nutrition than adult cats. It is important not to feed your kitten adult food.
  • Kittens may not always be able to get to the litter box in time since their bladders are small. As such you need to have many small litter boxes. You can place these in various parts of the home.
  • When selecting your kitten, pick the one that is healthy. You can examine a kitten’s health by the shine of her coat and clearness of her eyes. Healthy kittens are also outgoing and like being handled.
  • The kitten must also be taken to the vet at the earliest so that it can receive the necessary shots and worming doses. Other problems, if any, can also be detected early this way.
  • Kittens must be fed thrice daily until the age of six months.
  • Train your kitten to use the scratching post by taking her to the post many times each day. You can also rub some catnip on the post, to make it more appealing.
  • Prepare a soft comfortable place for the kittens to sleep using some old blankets or towels.
  • You can protect your kitten from dogs by placing baby gates at the doorway.

Warnings:

Never feed your kitten raw foods as kittens have fewer teeth which are also not as strong as the teeth of adult cats. You may moisten dry food by combining it with some warm water. Canned food may also be fed to the kitten. Also do not make it a habit to feed table scraps to your kitten as they contain many calories which can result in weight gain.
