Depression in Dogs

Depression is not something that just affects human beings. It can affect our pets too. Dog depression can be due to many reasons such as loss of another pet, sickness, and loneliness; even change in weather can affect a pet’s mood. The first step is to recognize the problem.  Take your pet to the veterinarian and find the cause of worry, whether it is physical or mental. Depression may not visible in pets easily, but if left untreated for too long, it may turn into a life threatening physical condition. There are many ways in which you can treat depression so long as the cause is known.

Losing a playmate is often a reason for depression in pets. Be sure you spend enough time with them when they are depressed. They need attention from you. If your pet is feeling depressed due to loneliness, make sure you keep it engaged in various activities. Another option is to get another pet so that they remain engaged in themselves.

Pets are outgoing and they love going out. Make sure you take them out for a walk at least once a day. They need fresh air and open environment to enjoy themselves and relax. Don’t keep them inside your house the whole day.  They easily get bored in a closed environment.

Even small changes can make your dog feel depressed. It takes time for them to adapt to the changes.  So when they are depressed due to changes such as a new house, make sure you give your pet the same comfort it had in the previous home.

Don’t get sad when you see your pet depressed, because it will get more depressed. Instead try to be happy and excited so that your pet also picks up on your positive mood.

Many a time pets get depressed when someone else gets the same attention as them. So make your feel special and loved always. Don’t leave them out. Familiarity is the key to keeping them happy. So make them feel that they are still very much a part of the family.

You can also treat depression through medication like anti-depressants. However, anti-depressants have side effects such as anxiety, loss of appetite and sluggishness.

Take your pet out of the house fora walk. Sunshine stimulates the pituitary gland in the brain, and thus helps improve mood.

When a new baby or pet is introduced at home, give your old pets extra care and attention. Don’t make them feel left out.
