Ayrshire Breed of Cow:

The Ayrshire breed of cattle has originated from the Ayrshire region which lies in the north-west part of Scotland.

They are also referred to as Cunninghame cattle or Dunlop cattle. Ayrshire cows are often bred with Holstein cows to produce a healthier breed of cows. Weighing between 450 to 600 kgs these cows carry characteristic markings which can range from red to dark brown. The colors on the bodies of Ayrshire cows are clearly defined.

The legs of the cattle may sometimes have markings on them, but not in all cases. The Ayrshire cow is renowned for its ability to efficiently produce milk from the grass they eat. They can yield good quality milk even from grazing on poor pastures. The milk they produce is high in butterfat.

Their longevity and spirited temperament also makes them popular. The high quality of milk they produce and their striking appearance make Ayrshire cows the ideal choice for commercial farmers.

Ayrshire cows grow to a medium size and weigh about 1200 pounds at the time of maturity. These cattle are rugged and are able to adapt easily to different systems of management. Their adaptability allows these cows to continue producing high quality milk under various conditions as they can withstand different types of temperatures. The ribs of these cows are deep and wide. This is indicative of their milk producing ability. The chest is strong and the neck and shoulders are uniform. These cows are considered as ideal for commercial dairy purposes due to their good udder conformation. The udders are deep, wide and long and the teats are uniformly placed. As such milk can be easily yielded from them. The calves too are known for their hardiness and vigor, and raising them becomes easy. Ayrshire cows are generally alert and display robust character. Their temperament is mild and they are particularly known for their strong legs and feet. The skin of Ayrshire cattle is soft and moderately thick, with fine hair. They have a fine bone structure which is in proportion to their body weight.
