Guernsey Cow Breed:

The Guernsey breed of cattle is well known for its rich flavored milk and docile temperament, which make it one of the easiest breeds to rear.



The milk obtained from this breed has a characteristic golden color. This results due to a high level of beta carotene. This carries special significance for consumers as foods rich in beta carotene help to reduce the risk of certain types of cancer.



The Guernsey cow requires a lesser amount of feed, but is still able to convert it into milk products. The adaptability of this breed is versatile and the cows are able to perform efficiently in any type of climate. Guernsey cows have a white or fawn coat which helps to tolerate heat and prevents stress from high temperatures.



As such these cows are able to produce milk efficiently anywhere. The Guernsey breed is also considered to be the best breed for intensive grazing.

Very few calving problems occur among this breed of cattle. They are able to calve properly even when paired with heavier breeds of bulls. In fact, Geurnsey cows are the best option for the purpose of crossbreeding. The maturity age of these cows is early and as such they are able to yield profits sooner than other cattle breeds. They can be bred for calving at the age of two years. Guernseys also live longer and their productive years last longer than other dairy breeds. Farmers prefer Guernseys for their mild temperament as it makes working with them quite easy. The Guernsey cows are able to convert feed into high proportions of butterfat and protein and as such their productive value increases even in the processing of dairy products such as butter and cheese. Research has indicated that Guernsey cows carry a gene called Kappa Casein ‘B’ which results in enhanced cheese characteristics.
