Natural Dog Food Recipes

Dogs, like humans are omnivorous and need a balance of protein, grains, and some vegetables.

Many pet owners already know that they must not feed their dogs packaged food and that it is harmful even if they feed their dogs with table scraps. Today, more and more pet owners are coming to understand the ills of feeding their dogs processed or canned food. Vets now attribute most of the pet illnesses to a highly processed dog diet. Your dog's behavior, health, and happiness is directly affected by what it eats.

As a responsible pet owner, it is your responsibility to ensure that your pet is provided with meals that contain particular proportions of essential nutrients like proteins, carbohydrates, fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals. The nutrient requirements vary for different dogs based on the breed, size, age, activity levels, and living environment. Homemade dog food offer a safer choice or you could opt for a combination of home-cooked meals and readymade food. There are many simple and easy recipes for natural dog food which are healthier and tastier as compared to canned food.

Some natural dog food recipes are basic dog broth, dog dumplings, chicken stock, doggy casserole, and vegetarian chowder.

Around 50% to 70% of the ingredients should be meat based, such as beef or chicken. The remainder of the meal should be made up of carbohydrates and vegetables. Do not use pasta or any other carbohydrates made from corn, wheat, or soy, since they are not good for dogs. Natural dog food recipes should contain some fat and oil, but also be low in sugar.

Here are some basic healthy foods to include in your pet’s diet.

  • Meat/Poultry and eggs
  • Dairy products such as yogurt, buttermilk, cheese
  • Carbohydrates such as rice, potatoes, beans
  • Fiber sources such as fresh vegetables and whole-grains.
Here are a few natural dog food recipes which are quick to prepare and healthy for your furry friend:
  • Doggy Casserole: Stir together the cooked rice, chicken broth, boiled vegetables and boiled poultry and serve at room temperature. You must store unused portions in a covered container in the refrigerator and discard the remains if not consumed within three days.
  • Lamb and Rice: Brown ground lamb and add cooked brown or white rice, broccoli or kelp, diced carrots and cover. Cook for 15 minutes. Let it cool before feeding it to your dog.
  • Rolled Oats and Yogurt Meal: Soak some rolled oats overnight and then mix plain yogurt and vegetables along with honey and apple cider vinegar and feed it to your dog.
  • Chicken Delight: Boil chicken and discard the bones. Meanwhile prepare brown rice by boiling water and cooking for 20 minutes. Add steamed vegetables and add liquid dog vitamins in the recommended proportions.
A proper, well balanced natural dog food diet will keep your pet healthy and also protect you from the expense of frequent visits to the vet. But always keep in mind that any dietary changes should be introduced slowly to avoid digestive upsets. Dogs that eat all natural dog foods have a higher life expectancy and better quality of life.
