Pet Medications

Submitted by Michael Adams on February 9, 2010

Your pet’s health needs constant attention, just like your own. To ensure this, it is important to help your pet maintain a healthy diet and disciplined eating patterns. Pets are susceptible to various kinds of illnesses and infection and it is therefore important to maintain a clean and safe environment for them.

They can sometimes suffer from nutritional deficiencies that may lead to various physical disorders. Giving your pet healthy and nutritious food helps him/her keep several diseases at bay. Pets often attract parasites in many forms and these may be very harmful to your pet’s health.

Ensure that you check your pet regularly for the presence of parasites like ticks and fleas on the skin and for any worms in his/her stomach. Intestinal worms are a common threat and several de - worming tablets will help provide relief for your pet. Keep a close watch on your dog’s fur by brushing his/her mane for sometime everyday. Use a fine tooth comb or brush and if you sense anything obstructing the comb, it could be a skin allergy or parasite. Pets require good medical care, just like us and you must therefore ensure that you visit a veterinarian periodically for health checks. The vet will also help with a specific diagnosis of your pet’s problem so he/she can be treated effectively. Most pets are affected by disorders like cancer, kidney or liver disease, diabetes, ulcers, poisoning and hernia. Since pets cannot communicate their lack of health or a feeling of being ill, you should keep a close watch on your pet to ensure that he/she is not sick. If your pet has not been eating or has been sleeping excessively or is inactive for a long period of time, you should contact your vet.

Most pet medications do not require a prescription, but some of them do and are sometimes available with your vet. You should read labels of all of your pet’s coat care products, medications and food products to ensure that he/she does not have an allergic reaction to the contents. Pet medication may be difficult to administer, especially if it is tablets. If your pet needs to be medicated with pills, you can try hiding the pills in a treat that your pet enjoys or you can place it deep in your pet’s throat using a pill syringe.
