Contrary to what most people think, cats make great companions. Domestic cats can provide company to people who are lonely, especially old people. There are approximately 40 different types or breeds of domestic cats, recognized across the globe. Cats of different breeds differ from each other in the coat length as well as their overall appearance. However, the difference in their sizes is less, as compared to other animals, like dogs. Cat breeds can primarily be divided into two categories - short haired cats and long haired cats. Both categories have a variety of cat breeds.

Given below is a list of some of the best feline breeds from across the world: 
  • Persian Cats: Persians are extremely elegant, regal and beautiful cats. By nature, they are quiet, but are also affectionate, docile and devoted.
  • Siamese Cats: Siamese cats are well known and recognized for their silky coats, blue eyes, and their affectionate nature.
  • Russian Blue Cats: These are very intelligent and playful cats. However, they are shy and timid around strangers. They are very popular as pets, because they make great companions and are less likely to cause allergies, as compared to other cats.
  • Tabby Cats: They have specific patterns to their fur as well as a distinctive “M” mark on the foreheads.
  • Rag-doll Cats: Rag-dolls are large, laidback, loving cats with playful and trusting personalities.
  • Tonkinese Cats: Tonkinese cats are very playful and get along well with people. They also have a mink pattern that is unique.
  • Oriental Cats: These cats resemble the Siamese cats, because of their slender bodies and sleek fur coats. They too have chatty personalities and can be found in different colors.
  • Birman Cats: These cats make great companions, as they are devoted and pleasant. They have beautiful silky coats, blue eyes and white gloves.
  • American Shorthair Cats: These cats are very popular with most people, because of their good looks and sturdy bodies. This is probably the most popular cat breed.  
  • Abyssinian Cats: These cats are very energetic, playful and active and have a bold ticked patterned fur coat.
  • Maine Coon Cats: Maine Coons are large, intelligent cats. They have sweet & pleasant personalities.
  • Exotic Cats: Exotic cats are quite similar to the Persian cats, in looks in built. By nature, they are sweet and affectionate.
Unfortunately, cats have often been regarded as being unfaithful and unfriendly, especially towards children. However, that is not necessarily true, as there are several instances of cats befriending children and helping them in different situations. Some of the best cat breeds for children are -
