Commercial Cat Food Benefits and Effects

Submitted by Michael Adams on May 12, 2010

Feeding your cat well is a key to your cat’s good health. A healthy amount of nutrients is required for any animal and a cat is no different. It is important to cover all the food groups that a cat requires which are the same groups as humans.

These are carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Although the food groups are the same as humans, the sources and quantities, even the ratios, of these foods is different for a cat. It is a good idea to read up on cat nutrition and how you can improve the diet of your cat.

Commercial cat food is available at most supermarkets and at all pet care stores. Such a diet tends to have a fixed amount of nutrients and can be good as base of your cat’s diet. It is not necessarily a good idea to only feed this type of food to your cat as some of the nutrients required by your cat tend to be missing. Another factor is that natural cat food tends to be varied on a day to day basis as meat and vegetables do not have a fixed exact amount of nutrients in them. This variation gives the cat’s digestive system a whole range of nutrients that might not be instantly available from other forms.

In order to check if you are feeding them healthy cat food, all you have to do is look at its condition. A pet that is fed well and with nutritious foods is likely to have a smooth and shining coat and generally appear healthy. A cat that lacks energy or appears to be tired with rough patches of hair is not being nourished properly. Cats enjoy poultry and fish products and these provide some vital protein. Make sure your cat is fed these from time to time.

Cats are also easily dehydrated, especially in warm weather. You must provide an easily accessible source of water for your cat. Cats also enjoy dairy products but may not be able to digest them. Plain milk is not a bad idea for your cat as a supplement to its daily meals. You should ensure that plants, especially poisonous varieties are not easily within reach of your cat. Cats tend to be curious and may eat or nibble at your plants. If your cat is displaying signs of weakness or tiredness, visit your vet and check that the diet you are feeding your cat is good for your cat’s health.
