How to Toilet Train Dog

It is not rare to find a dog that has no toilet training and relieves itself where ever it wants.

Many dog owners are unhappy with their dogs because of this problem. When a dog is not toilet trained, it becomes quite problematic for a dog owner. Fortunately, toilet training is something that can be taken up at any age.

Although it takes a bit of effort, the results of toilet training are well worth the labor.

Start with being extra observant of your dog. Learn to read your dog’s body language.

This will help you to find out the exact time when your dog needs to go relieve itself. If you have not done so already, make sure that you now make a consistent schedule for your dog so that your dog relieves itself as you have trained it to. When you take your dog out to relieve itself at the same time everyday, it will eventually begin to want to go out at that time. Apart from your dog’s toilet habits, do not try to change any of the other habits. Your dog should continue to receive food and water and should continue to enjoy all play activities in the same manner as earlier. If you introduce any change in the dietary or environmental patterns of the dog, the training may not have much effect.

To begin with dog toilet training, you must understand that there are usually six times in a day when the dog feels like relieving itself. The first is when the dog goes to bed at night and another when it wakes up in the morning. If your dog naps during the day, it will also have to be taken after the day’s nap. The dog may also need to relieve itself after a long and grueling session of physical activity or after returning to home from an outdoor activity. To reinforce its habits while toilet training a dog, give your dog a lot of treats. However, if the dog commits a mistake or relieves itself inside the house despite the training, stop giving any treats. This will act as a negative reinforcement. Using a crate can help you with housebreaking the dog. If by chance you catch your dog is positioning itself to urinate or defecate inside the house, immediately make a loud noise to distract and stop the dog.
The best dog toilet training tips include toilet training a dog from the time it is a puppy. This will ensure constant reinforcement of your dog’s training.
