Cat sneezing causes

Causes of Cat Sneezing:

Some cat owners are bewildered to see their cats sneezing.

However, some cats sneeze more than others and that may be a cause of worry for you. A lot of cats tend to develop infections in their upper respiratory tract. Sometimes, some cats may also accidentally get a foreign object lodged in their nasal passages. In both these situations, there is irritation in the airways and the cats keep sneezing.

Usually, this is not very serious. However, it is best not to overlook a sneezing cat. If there is an infection in the respiratory tract, there are chances that it might just spread and therefore it should not be overlooked.

The major cause of your pet cat sneezing is the improper functioning of the cat’s respiratory system.

Your cat may not be sick but there are chances that it may get sick. Sometimes, when the cat is sneezing a lot, it is best to check for other symptoms like swollen eyes or swollen glands. If there is something abnormal, you may want to take your cat to a veterinarian doctor.

Here are some of the common causes of cat sneezing:

  • Upper respiratory infection: Such an infection may be caused by the parainfluenza virus or the adenovirus. These are viral infections that cause chest congestion in cats. These viruses produce excessive mucus and are also extremely contagious. An influenza infection can cause swollen eyes and lymph glands, excessive sneezing and lethargy in the cat. If your cat is infected with the influenza virus, it should be separated from any other animals that you might have in your home.
  • Viruses like Bordatella and Adeno 2: These viruses cause sneezing in cats and are highly contagious. In fact, a cat may pass these viruses to humans too. Therefore it is important to get your cat’s symptoms diagnosed by the vet as soon as possible.
  • Allergies: Allergies are one of the most common causes of sneezing in cats. Just like humans, cats too may be allergic to certain substances. They may be allergic to certain chemicals or grooming products. Smoke and other infections may also cause irritation in their air passages causing sneezing.
  • Dental Problems: A lot of the time, though we don’t suspect it, cat sneezing is caused due to dental problems. Infections from the upper portion of the dentition can often cause irritations in the nasal passage and therefore the cat experiences frequent sneezing.
