Dog Upset Stomach Treatments, Causes:

Have you ever seen your dog eating grass? If so, then your dog is probably suffering from stomach problems.

Dogs often suffer from stomach disorders that make them bloat, vomit, or pass loose stools. Sometimes stomach upsets are simply because of over eating or allergies and you can give your dog pepto bismol to cure these symptoms. For an upset stomach, pepto bismol can be very effective and can cure dog upset stomach. However, there are other stomach disorders that are of a more serious nature and should be examined thoroughly.

Gastric dilatation and volvulus syndrome (GDV) also known as a bloat or twisted upset stomach, can be a very serious illness in dogs. This condition can cause critical damage to the animal's stomach depending on the extent of dilation or torsion in the stomach.

Those dogs whose abdominal cavity is wider, are more susceptible to this disorder. This is a disease particular to the larger dog breeds.

This condition is caused if the stomach rotates during digestion causing a disruption in the circulation of blood and problems in the expulsion of accumulated gastric gases. When your pet has been involved in strenuous exercises and then suddenly consumes a large quantity of water, there is a production of an excessive amount of gas. The stomach is not always able to expel this excessive amount of gases and the animal feels uncomfortable. When the animal feels a discomfort in the stomach, it drinks even more water, further aggravating the problem. The stomach keeps getting dilated and starts to rotate completely.

Remedies for Upset Stomach in Dogs:

Usually when the symptoms are detected on time, treatment can be provided effectively and the gases are allowed to be removed from the body. Depending on the extent of the torsion of the stomach, the treatment needs to be expedited. If the torsion is partial, surgical procedures may not be required. However, if the torsion is complete, the dog may need immediate intervention and a surgical procedure to correct the torsion. If the treatment is not received on time, the dog may eventually die.

Preventing Upset Stomach in Dogs:

For proper pet health care, it is not advisable to make your pet exercise around meal times. There should be a gap of one hour before and one hour after the meal if the dog has to be exercised.

Try to prevent your dog from drinking large quantities of water all the time. When it's time to feed your pet, give only high quality foods. Do not give one large meal. Instead break it into two smaller meals so that the dog does not eat too much in one go.
