Underweight Dog

In the case of an underweight dog, the chances of it getting some serious health conditions is very high.

Underweight causes can range from medical reasons to simply not being fed enough food. An underweight dog should be fed a diet that is rich in both fat and in protein. However one should ensure that an underweight dog is not fed too much as this can also lead to health problems for the animal. When choosing the underweight dog diet one should ensure that the food is healthy for the animal.

Feeding the dog good food can help the underweight dog to gain weight and muscle mass. In the case of underweight dogs, feeding them on puppy food is generally advised. Else feeding the animal on a diet that is prescribed by a vet is advised. Underweight dog food is food that is primarily high in real meat ingredients.

These meals should not be made up of by products. A good underweight dog food should also consist of plenty of vegetables that provide the underweight dog with the healthy fats it needs. Another vital part of gaining weight is that the food should strictly be vet recommended and essentially very healthy.

In the case of a dog that is severely underweight starting the dog off on small and gradual meals is recommended. One can also try and offer the animal some canned or dry food that is dog food once every few hours. One should not allow the underweight dog to gorger itself too much on the food. Instead make the dog eat smaller meals several times in a day. This helps the dog in gaining weight and also allows its underweight body to get used to the fat in the meals. Never allow an underweight dog to start eating right away as this can cause additional problems in its digestion process. One should always maintain a strict diet plan with an underweight dog. The eating schedule for an underweight dog should always be a good one. Feeding the animal at least 3 times in a day is recommended. One can even feed the animal some smaller meals more often. One should gradually increase the size of each meal. If an underweight dog does not eat dry kibble then one can try to mix this along with some canned food and try this to tempt the dog. Make sure that the underweight dog is taken to a vet regularly for health checks.
