Dog Breeds List

Dogs are among the most loved of all animals and those who love their dogs are also often very particular about dog breeds.

Dog breeds are groups of several closely related animals who are similar in shape, size, physical, and physiological features.

All of the dog breeds are subspecies of the Canidae family. Many dogs are bred by humans, carefully selecting desired characteristic traits. They are all bred from a known stock and have different characteristics and physical features.

There are of course many natural breeds from which animals are selected for selective cross breeding. These dog breeds usually have no scientific basis of classification.

Different Dog Breeds:

In a list of dog breed, there are hundreds of known and acknowledged breeds of dogs.

To find a dog breed and its particular characteristics, one may have to put in extensive amounts of research. However, most of the dog breed info is available with breed clubs, kennel clubs, and veterinarians.

Some of the most popular dog breeds all over the world are the Labrador Retriever, English Cocker Spaniel, English Springer Spaniel, German Shepherd Dog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Staffordshire bull terrier, West Highland White Terrier, Golden Retriever, Boxer, and Border Terrier.

Most of the people living in cities select from a small dog breed. Smaller breeds are easier to maintain and make more sense when you’re living in small apartments. Smaller dogs are also often easier to train and carry around. These are often known as toy dogs or lap dogs. Lhasa Apsos and Chihuahuas are some of the common small dog breeds.

People in the countryside or with big townhouses prefer to have big dogs. A similar trend has been observed in people with big families.

It is not known how dogs first came to live with human settlements. Though dogs are carnivorous animals from the family of wolves, they go a long way in their association with humans. There is little scientific data available on this subject. However, it is known from the ancient artworks, that dogs were used by humans when they began to grow food. Even at that time, humans classified them based on the dog types. Over a period of time, dogs too developed naturally to better fit with the climate, surroundings and also their roles.

Though there are still many pure bred dogs all over the world, cross breeders keep creating new breeds. While purebreds are usually show dogs, they are seldom kept as pets. Mixed breed varieties are more common and are preferred by those who want to keep pets.
