Canary Dog - Information on the Breed, Puppies, Breeders, For Sale, Color, Nature, Appearance and Temperament

It is believed that the Canary dog breed was developed in the early nineteenth century by cross breeding the Bardino Majero and English mastiff.

The Bardino Majero is now an extinct breed. The Canary breed was bred for dog fighting, which was a popular sport in those days. The name Canary was given as the breed was first developed in the Canary Islands.

The Canary dog breed is also known by other names such as Dogo Canario and Presa Canario.

Color, Nature, Appearance and Temperament

Their color is usually brindle or fawn in different shades. On the face, there is a dark brown or black mask sort of patch. They have a short but rough coat that is very easy to groom.

The adult male canary dog stands at 22 to 25 inches, whereas the female canary dog’s height ranges from 20 to 23 inches. Males weigh anything between 45 and 50 kilos, while females weigh between 35 and 40 kilos. The life span of these dogs is 9 to 12 years.

The Canary dog is a very strong and powerful breed. They have a distinctive broad head, which almost looks square shaped. Their chest is deep and elevated with strong bones. Overall, they have a powerful muscular body. The ears of the canary dogs are generally cropped.

Owing to their physical attributes and temperament, Canary dogs turn out to be great watch dogs and companions, if trained properly. They are very trustworthy and loyal dogs. They are very keen to follow the orders of their master and love to get their attention. However, keep in mind that if you want to own a Canary dog, you need to be a dominant owner. You will also need to take your Canary dog for daily walks and exercises.

Additionally, before taking home a Canary pup, you should consult with your family members as the appearance of Canary dogs is such that the children at home may be frightened around them. When it comes to health problems, although Canary dogs are very strong, being a large breed, they are quite susceptible to hip bone dislocations.
