Karakachan Dog Breed, Information, Appearance, Life Expectancy, Nature and Training

The karakachan dog breed has its origin in Bulgaria.

It is known to be one of the oldest dog species in Europe.  The Karakachan dog gets its name from the Balkan nomadic tribe which was able to protect and conserve some of the oldest species of sheep, horses and dogs through the use of strict, conventional breeding norms. Karakachan dogs are also referred to as Bulgarian Shepherd Dogs and Thracian Mollos. Their ancestry can be traced back to the Thracians who were the earliest inhabitants of the Balkan Peninsula. The Karakachan dog breed began its development in the third millennium B.C. Here is some more interesting karakachan dog information.

The bulgarian karakachan dog was primarily used to herd sheep.

These dogs are extremely efficient at herding and also display great loyalty to their owners and herd. A karakachan dog will show willingness to take on other dogs and animals such as bears and wolves in order to protect the herd and owner. This dog is quite proportionate in appearance. The skull is broad and large. The muzzle is also quite big.

It tapers towards the nose and ends in a wide base. The broad nose has a majestic appearance about it. The lips of a karakachan dog are thick and the upper lip extends over the lower lip. The jaws are quite powerful and consist of 22 teeth in the lower jaw and 20 teeth in the upper jaw. The eyes are deeply set and small. Usually the eyes are dark colored, but this may vary according to the coat. The eyes also have a confident and alert look. The ears are close to the head and short. These dogs have short but strong necks.

Karakachan dogs are essentially working dogs and are most comfortable when they are given work. They are known to develop strong bonds with their owners and also the children in the household. These dogs are not suited to remain as home dogs. They should be kept on farms where they can utilize their guarding abilities. It is important for these dogs to get a great deal of exercise. It is advisable to take them on daily brisk walks. Obedience dog training is recommended for Karakachan dogs. Proper socialization should begin from an early age. Owners should establish leadership so that the dogs see them as the leader of the pack. Karakachan dogs are known to have a life expectancy of 12 to 14 years.
