Krasky Ovcar Dog Breed, Breeders, Puppies, Life Expectancy and Temperament


Krasky Ovcar is a Yugoslavian flock guard dog.



Krasky Ovcar breeders are mostly found in Slovenia which used to be a part of Yugoslavia. It is also known by the names of Karst Sheepdog and Istrian. It gets the name Karst Sheepdog from the Karst plateau in Slovenia and Italy. The ancestral breed of this breed used to travel with herders.



Sometimes this breed is spelt differently but it usually represents the same breed. Today it is considered a national treasure of Slovenia.

This breed’s extinction was threatened some decades ago and that’s when some dogs were introduced into the breeding program for the Krasky Ovcar. These shepherd dogs have mixed origins for different regions but today Krasky Ovcar is the only one in this breed that is popular in Europe. In the 20th century, the documentation of the shepherd dogs began, this breed was named Illyrian Shepherd.



But later this breed was further divided into two breeds. Today this breed is recognized all over the world and wanted for its uniqueness as a pet.

This dog breed grows to a height of 24 inches and can weigh up to 88 pounds. Males weight up to 92 pounds and have a height of 24 inches while the females weigh 82 pounds and have a height of 22 inches. It has a dense, medium and harsh coat. It is found in iron gray colors and a coat of dark gray is preferred. It is a medium-sized dog that has a developed musculature. This dog has a dual coat, with short outer coat and long dense undercoat. The length of the top coat of the Kraksy Ovcar dog can be up to 3 to 4 inches. It has a life expectancy of about 11-12 years.

This breed is known to have a strong personality with a sharp temperament and individualistic personality. This breed is naturally distrustful and leery of strangers. As they are herding dogs, if trained well, they can make good family dogs that will take care of your family. Krasky Ovcar puppies need to be trained early in order to make them family dogs. Like most dogs, you have to train it well to show who the pack leader is. These dogs are used to following one pack leader and it is important to establish who the leader is. It is generally an independent and intelligent dog. This dog does not fare well in an apartment.
