Boston terrier

Boston terrier dog, breed, characteristics, personality, diet and food

The breed of boston terriers, also known as boston bulls, originated in the United States of America around the 1870,s.

These dogs are rather lively and intelligent and have a smooth coat. The boston terrier size is characterized by a short head, compact body and a short tail. Their ears normally stand erect while their short muzzle is generally free of any wrinkles.

The dogs ideally weigh no less than 10 pounds to a maximum of 25 pounds. The neck will appear slightly arched and its chest quite broad. The dogs are generally a trainers dream as they are very easy to train because of their general inclination to learn new things.

The fact that they are quite intelligent allows them to pick up instructions rather easily. However, it is essential that the dog is trained by a commanding individual, as if no proper leadership has been shown by the trainer, the dog could start to become a little willful. The boston bulls will usually have a strong, yet friendly personality and will generally bark only when required. Studies have shown that these dogs usually like having another dog or even a collection of people around for companionship.

If you choose this breed then make sure you are aware of all boston terrier characteristics for good reason. One of the main drawbacks of this breed is the fact that they suffer from a number of health issues. Conditions like cherry eye, deafness, heart murmur and some allergies are very common. The presence of some patella problems with the rear legs may also cause a curvature of the back, thereby altering the animal,s body structure. This breed of dog also finds it hard to adjust to excessive cold or hot conditions and asking them to perform strenuous exercise in these conditions can also cause significant harm to their bodies. Under proper living conditions and a healthy diet, the boston terriers have a life span of more than 15 years while giving birth to about 3 to 4 puppies in every litter.

Boston terriers prefer hard foods to soft ones as it helps strengthen their teeth over a period of time, thereby making them less prone to cavities. Make sure that your pet consumes a sufficient amount of water over the course of the day to prevent dehydration. Avoid feeding the dog any small bones such as chicken bones that could possibly lodge themselves in the animal,s throat – leading to a possible choking hazard.
